¿Para qué sirven?
Los pronombres relativos (who, which, that, whose, where, when) sirven para unir dos oraciones y evitar repetir el sustantivo.
Two oraciones sueltas: I met a woman. She lives next door.
Con relativo: I met the woman who lives next door.
Unes las dos, no repites "she/the woman", y suenas natural.
Cuál usar según qué reemplazas
| Relativo | Se refiere a | Ejemplo |
who | Personas | The teacher who lives here is nice. |
which | Cosas o animales | The book which I bought is boring. |
that | Personas o cosas (informal, muy común) | The book that I bought is boring. |
whose | Posesión (de persona o cosa) | The woman whose car was stolen called the police. |
where | Lugares | This is the café where we met. |
when | Momentos en el tiempo | I remember the day when we moved. |
why | Razones | The reason why he left is unclear. |
Esencial: The students who study pass the exam.
Extra: My brother, who lives in Toronto, is a doctor.
Regla crítica: that NUNCA va después de coma
En cláusulas ESENCIALES (sin comas) puedes usar that. En cláusulas EXTRA (con comas) usa which o who, nunca that.
✗ My brother, that lives in Toronto, is a doctor.
Con comas → who. Correcto: My brother, who lives in Toronto, is a doctor.
Cuándo puedes OMITIR el relativo
Puedes omitir who / which / that cuando funcionan como objeto del verbo (no como sujeto), en cláusulas esenciales.
The book (that) I bought is boring.
That es objeto de bought — puedes omitirlo.
The woman (who) you met is my sister.
Igual, puedes omitir who.
✗ The book — I bought yesterday — is boring.
No lo omitas si suena raro. Pero: The book I bought yesterday is boring ✓ suena natural.
Pero NO puedes omitir cuando es sujeto: The teacher who lives here...
The woman whose car was stolen called the police.
"whose car" = "cuyo carro / su carro" (de ella).
The company whose employees went on strike is negotiating.
"whose" también funciona con cosas (empresa).
Errores típicos
✗ The book who I bought is boring.
Book es cosa. Correcto: which o that.
✗ The place which we met is beautiful.
Es lugar → where.
✗ The woman who is car was stolen...
Es posesión → whose. Correcto: whose car was stolen.
